Friday was the Fun Team's annual Chili Bowl. Traditionally this event is more work than any of the other events that we host. This year's Chili Bowl did not disappoint. It's a fun event, everyone enjoys it and looks forward to it, but it's a lot of work for the Fun Team!
Here are just two examples of my day:
1. Email from some guy I don't know, he's not on the Fun Team nor a contestant - "our samples on 5th floor are still sitting here in the microwave, why aren't our samples being judged??" Forget pleasantries, huh, guy I don't know! This was sent to me at like 11:45. The event wasn't near over yet. Votes from the floors are being counted at 2. Winners are then taken to judges. Deep breath. Keep sarcasm inside. "Hi (insert name here), thank you for bringing your concern to my attention blah blah blah..."
2. A Fun Team member lent us her large roaster to warm up the hot dogs. There was one other roaster for a total of 2. At the end of the day, her roaster was 'missing'. Yet we still have 2 roasters after the event. Can someone please tell me how we start with 2 roasters and end with 2 roasters, but they are DIFFERENT roasters?!? The answer is we don't. AND, it's her HUSBAND saying that's not their roaster (who doesn't work at BV)! WHAT?? I guess other groups she's lent this roaster to have had this issue with her husband too. Deep breath. Keep sarcasm inside.
I usually don't participate in making chili, I'll bring a side or dessert, but we had a lower participation than we usually do, so I decided to make a batch to bring in. This was pork chili verde. It was the first time I had ever made this...and quite possibly the last! It was a LOT of work! But it was very tasty. If I do say so myself. Which I do.
The Chili Bowl is scheduled when it is to coincide with the Super Bowl, so it was also a 'support your favorite team' day. So, OF COURSE I had to wear a Broncos shirt! I bought this just for this day. I had to buy it online...you wouldn't believe how hard it is for a girl to find a Denver shirt in Kansas City! And yes, I was heckled all day. Um...what's YOUR team doing this Sunday? 'Cause mine's playing in the Super Bowl!
This was just one of my computer screens the morning of the event. Those are conversation windows with various people. All asking what they need to do. I guess the spreadsheets, schedules, instructions, emails and meetings weren't enough. Deep breath. Keep sarcasm inside.
It's like they've never eaten before! Offer a group of Engineers a room full of free food...and it's best if you just get the heck out of the way.
This was the overflow room with items brought in.
I didn't win, but did get several votes. And there was pretty much nothing left of it.
My Fitbit told me I walked 1.39 miles while I was at work. Most of it was during the Chili Bowl.
The winner of each floor (6 total) all receive one of these fancy aprons. The overall grand champion (who happened to be on my floor this year) gets a brand new crockpot, a traveling trophy and most importantly, bragging rights.
Close up of the embroidered graphic for the apron. For as simple as this graphic is, it was quite a bit of work to design. I had to get approval of the BV logo from the marketing group (there are a LOT of requirements), I had to think about cost by bringing the number of stitches down, keep the overall size small enough to keep cost down, but big enough to not only look good but be able to be stitched, etc, etc. My favorite part is the 'I' in CHOICE is a little spoon. I had used that spoon in the fliers I designed also. I really wanted this little spoon in the design. I fought hard for that little spoon.
