The next KC Design Week event we went to was Color + Couture. This was a mini version of a larger event that happens in the fall. In the Design Week version, product vendors (carpet, fabric, laminates, etc) dropped off samples of their products. The teams of designers met at 3pm and started designing garments out of the samples until the fashion show at 7pm that night. It's very similar to Project Runway, complete with an accessory wall!
When we first got there, they had a screen set up scrolling through last fall's C+C event. The person on the screen in this photo is my friend Nicole. She was on a team from her firm and was also the 'model' that walked the dress. Their creation was amazing!
A big crowd gathered early to enjoy food and drink. This even was held at the Vox Theatre, which is owned by the photographer that took photos of the bulldogs last summer.
While we were eating and chatting, the designers were putting the finishing touches on their garments
Almost showtime, and the crowd is huge!
Look close at the balcony edge up in the upper right corner of the photo...do you see that black blob? The owner of the building has a black lab, and he hangs out with him at work. That's his head, he was up there watching all of the action!
Show time! This was our MC, he was a lot of fun! No, that's not his real hair, that's a wig from the accessory wall!
Each model took a spin down the runway...
...then they had to do a 'challenge' that the MC had for them, just to prove that the garment was wearable! This was hopscotch.

I just hate it when my heel gets caught in my chicken wire skirt, don't you??
Somersaults was her challenge
I don't remember what her challenge was, and I guess it wasn't very impressive, I didn't have a photo of it!
She had a metal skirt on, and they wanted her to play leapfrog with their design representative as her challenge! I hope they had 9-1-1 on standby!
Jumping Jacks
This was judge's (and my) favorite
She had to quickly spin around in circles. Want to risk having a model fall off a catwalk? Have her spin in circles!
J. Gilbert's (a local restaurant) was one of the sponsors of KC Design Week, and they gave us a little 'swag' after the event!
Plus a coupon!
Remember the plane we went to see that was on top of the new Roasterie Coffee building (Mom & Dad)? It's finished, so on my way back home I drove past it to see it lit up at night.
