Saturday night a group of girlfriends (and a couple of husbands) went to see a show. A Golden Girls-themed show. At a gay bar. Performed by men in drag. Yes, my life is pretty awesome.
There is a group of men, led by Ron McGee (who played Dorothy, and is extremely talented) that writes, produces and acts in these productions. It's called Late Night Theatre. This show was the first after a 7-year hiatus, and it did not disappoint. It was hilarious. I laughed the entire time.
As we were sitting waiting for the show to start, they played theme songs to TV shows from the 80s. The whole audience was singing along. It was so fun!
This is 'Dirty Dorothy'. The venue it was held at (called Missy B's) is her bar, she has a regular show there, which is Wizard of Oz-themed and she was the hostess for the night. (Yes, she's actually a real girl).
They introduced everyone as if it were a TV show; credits, theme music and all.
They sat around the kitchen table with either 'coffee' (pretty sure it was alcohol) or cheesecake (yes, real cheesecake). Fun fact...the Golden Girls consumed over 100 cheesecakes over their 7-year run, and Bea Arthur didn't even like cheesecake! (My friend Ashley knew this for some reason)
Ron looked and sounded exactly like Bea Arthur.
The show was scripted, but there was a lot of ad-libbing going on too.
They even had 'Stan'.
Each Golden Girl had a musical number during the show.
The show runs the entire month of March with shows Friday-Monday. Each night, there is a special guest that comes, and the actors don't know who it is or what they are going to be doing. It's pretty random and doesn't really have to do with the Golden Girls, but it was funny to see the regular players crack up at what was going on. Left is the special guest, a local female comedian, right is Ron laughing at what she was doing.
This was one of the best scenes. Rose booked them for a weekend at a mountain resort, but didn't know it was a nudist resort. Oh, Rose. I'll spare you what happened when they dropped the towel!
I hope this video comes through! Nothing makes me happier than a sing-along with an audience full of gay men, led by 4 men dressed in Golden Girls drag, to the theme song from the Golden Girls!
