Color+Couture 2013

There's an event that the Mid-American Chapter of the IIDA (International Interior Design Association) hosts every year called Color+Couture.  Design professionals from area firms (not just interior designers...any discipline is welcome to participate) create teams of up to 4 people and pair with a local product rep - think tile, carpet, upholstery, wall coverings - and that rep gives the teams a box of samples.  The teams then create a garment out of those samples and put on a fashion show.

A group of friends of mine from work and I had thought about entering, but none of us had even attended the event before.  So, we decided to attend this year as spectators to see what exactly we would be getting ourselves into!

It.  Was.  Awesome.

These were all shot with my iPhone, so they are grainy and blurry, but you get the idea!  I thought about bringing my big camera but decided not to since I didn't know what to expect.  I wish I had, though, I would've fit right in with the pros hired that night and probably could've just walked anywhere I wanted to!

It was held at an outdoor amphitheater, but luckily there was an indoor space that it actually took place at.  It was cold that night!

Dang photographers.  Always getting in the way.

A friend of mine was on the team that designed this gown.  The girl wearing the dress WORKED it.  They won one of the awards that night!

This poor girl's dress was made entirely out of glass mosaic tiles.  It probably weighed 50 lbs!  You could tell she was having a little trouble walking (and was nervous - all the models were part of the teams, none were 'real' models.

This dress won the judge's overall 'haute couture' award for the night.

This was one of my favorites and won people's choice.  The team was from Populous, the firm that designs all of the stadiums.  Their model put on quite the show!

The underside of her dress was lined in glass mosaic tile!

The event was open bar and had tons of yummy food.

The final walk after all of the winners were announced!

They also had a fun photobooth set up, so we hopped in and took some photos!  The blond on the left is Laura (probably the ONLY engineer at the event), then Michelle is next to her (interior designer), and Sarah is on the other side of me (landscape architect).  We also had another interior designer and an architect that came with us (Katie and Kaley - they are new to our little group), but they had to leave early.  We were obviously caught off-guard for the 2nd shot, I was excited about the rainbow cowboy hat I found in the box of props!

Below are some videos of the event that I took with my iPhone:
